COMMON HOME INVADERS

Ants

Ant
Ants typically invade homes seeking food, water, and shelter. They enter through tiny openings like cracks in walls, gaps around windows or doors, and other small crevices. Once inside, ants follow scent trails left by scout ants to locate sources of food, often in kitchens or dining areas. They are particularly attracted to sweet, greasy, or protein-rich foods. Ant colonies communicate and coordinate their efforts, quickly establishing well-defined paths to and from food sources. These trails can lead to large numbers of ants converging on a food source. The invasion intensifies if the food supply remains accessible and their nest is undisturbed.

Bed Bugs

Bedbugs
Bedbugs are expert hitchhikers, often invading homes by latching onto luggage, clothing, and other personal items. These small, reddish-brown insects, typically the size of an apple seed, are attracted to warmth, carbon dioxide, and human blood. They can easily travel from infested areas like hotels, hostels, or apartments, hiding in the seams and folds of fabric or in the crevices of furniture. Once inside a home, they find hidden spots to nest, such as mattress seams, bed frames, behind baseboards, or within upholstery. Their flat bodies allow them to fit into tiny spaces, often going unnoticed until an infestation develops.

Crickets

Crickets often enter homes through various small openings that may not be immediately noticeable. These can include gaps under doors, cracks in window frames, or openings around utility pipes and wires. They are attracted to warm, moist environments, which are often found inside homes, especially during dry or colder seasons. Basements, crawl spaces, and kitchens are common areas where crickets might congregate. Once inside, crickets are drawn to food crumbs, fabrics, and plants. They can also accidentally wander indoors while searching for shelter or following light sources that lead them through open windows or unscreened vents. Regularly sealing gaps and maintaining a clean, dry environment can help prevent cricket infestations.

Cockroaches

Cockroaches, notorious for their resilience and adaptability, can invade homes through various means. They often enter through cracks and crevices in walls, doors, and windows, seeking shelter and sustenance. These pests are attracted to food remnants, moisture, and cluttered areas, making kitchens and bathrooms prime targets. They can also hitch a ride inside bags, boxes, or secondhand appliances. Once inside, they reproduce rapidly, thriving in dark, hidden spaces like behind appliances or within walls. Their presence is not only a nuisance but also a health concern, as they can spread bacteria and trigger allergies or asthma. Regular cleaning, sealing entry points, and proper food storage are crucial in preventing a cockroach infestation.

Millepeds

Spider - pirata piraticus
Millipedes often enter homes through small openings and gaps in search of moisture and shelter. They are attracted to damp environments, so they commonly infiltrate through foundational cracks, gaps around doors, windows, or through basement windows and vents. In homes, they gravitate towards humid areas like basements, crawlspaces, and bathrooms. Millipedes can also be inadvertently brought inside on potted plants or in mulch and leaf piles. Once indoors, they usually stay in hidden, moist areas. While they are not harmful, their presence can be a nuisance. Sealing cracks and maintaining a dry indoor environment are key to preventing their entry.

Rodents

Rodent in Kitchen
Rodents, such as mice and rats, invade homes in search of food, water, and shelter. These small, agile creatures exploit tiny openings, as small as a dime for mice and a quarter for rats. They often enter through gaps in foundations, vents, or under doors. Once inside, they nest in secluded areas like wall voids, attics, or basements. Rodents are nocturnal, mostly active at night, and can go unnoticed for some time. They gnaw on various materials, causing damage to wires, insulation, and household items. Their presence is not only a nuisance but also poses health risks, as they can carry diseases and contaminate food sources.

Silver Fish

Silverfish are small, wingless insects known for their silvery-grey color and fish-like movements. They commonly enter homes through various small openings. Cracks in foundations, gaps around window frames, and spaces beneath doors are typical entry points. These pests are also known to hitchhike inside on items like cardboard boxes, books, and old papers. Favoring dark, moist environments, they often reside in basements, attics, kitchens, and bathrooms. Once inside, they seek out starches and sugars, feeding on books, wallpaper, insulation, and even clothing. Their nocturnal nature and preference for hidden spaces make them hard to notice until an infestation occurs.

Spiders

Spider - pirata piraticus
Spiders often invade homes through small cracks and openings in search of food or shelter. These arachnids, drawn to warm, dark, and quiet environments, typically enter through gaps around windows and doors, vents, or even plumbing and electrical conduits. Once inside, they seek out secluded areas like corners, closets, basements, attics, and behind furniture. Their presence is more noticeable during colder months as they seek refuge from dropping temperatures. Some spiders are attracted to indoor spaces by the abundance of prey, such as flies and other insects, which are lured by lights or the presence of food in the home.
